The Honest Farmer and the Greedy Merchant

ফেরিওয়ালা

Once upon a time in a small village, there lived a humble farmer named Ravi and a wealthy merchant named Sohan. Ravi was known for his hard work and honesty, while Sohan was known for his wealth and greed.

One day, while plowing his field, Ravi found a bag full of gold coins buried in the soil. Surprised and a little overwhelmed, Ravi immediately thought of what to do. He knew the gold didn’t belong to him, so he decided to take it to the village head to find the rightful owner.

As he was on his way, he met Sohan, the merchant. Sohan noticed the bag of gold and asked Ravi about it. When Ravi explained how he found the gold and his plan to return it, Sohan’s eyes gleamed with greed.

Sohan quickly devised a plan. "Oh, Ravi! That bag of gold belongs to me! I buried it in the field for safekeeping. Thank you for finding it!" he lied, thinking he could easily deceive the honest farmer.

Ravi was unsure, but he didn’t want to accuse Sohan without proof. He suggested they go to the village head and let him decide.

When they reached the village head and explained the situation, the wise leader asked Sohan a simple question. "If this gold is truly yours, tell me what was inside the bag besides the coins."

Sohan hesitated, not knowing the answer. He stammered, "Um, just gold coins…"

The village head smiled and turned to Ravi. "What did you find when you opened the bag, Ravi?"

Ravi replied, "There were some gold coins and a small piece of paper with a name written on it, but I couldn’t read it well."

The village head examined the bag and found the piece of paper. It had the name of a villager who had passed away years ago, with no known family or heirs. The gold was to be returned to the village fund for the benefit of everyone.

Sohan was embarrassed and ashamed, realizing that his greed had been exposed. The village head praised Ravi for his honesty and rewarded him with enough gold to buy new seeds and tools for his farm.

From that day on, the villagers admired Ravi even more for his honesty, and Sohan learned a valuable lesson: honesty always prevails, and greed leads to nothing but disgrace.

### **Moral:**
Honesty is always the best policy. Greed and lies may offer temporary gains, but they lead to loss and shame in the end.
